Follow Your Bliss

Updated: Apr 15, 2020

“Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls.” One of my favorite quotes by Joseph Campbell. It sounds simple, right? But in my experience, I have found this to be one of the most difficult concepts to grasp. I think we get really confused about what makes us happy because we are drowning out our desires with the needs and desires of others. We rarely take a moment and ask ourselves what does it mean to follow my bliss? What makes me happy? We are being presented by what our parents think we should do, what teachers say is the right path to follow, what society tells us, what our friends need but we rarely ask ourselves what we enjoy. And that becomes our habit. Pleasing others. It seems a little backward to me.

The path to finding our bliss is really to ask ourselves questions. Relax. Be curious. And ask. What makes me happy? What feels good? As we embark on this journey of self-discovery, we begin to understand that we have the power to create our lives more in alignment with what we truly desire. When what we really care about becomes our goal, our path to bliss unfolds naturally.

“Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls.” - Joseph Campbell.

The biggest roadblock I’ve found to finding our bliss is contradictory thoughts. Those thoughts based in doubt and fear that go against your desire. I can’t have that; I can’t do that. Sound familiar? The ego-mind will kick in immediately when a new desire is realized to keep you the same, to keep you from expanding beyond what you’ve known. Thank that voice, for it makes you human! Thank it then move on. Don’t give the power over to your doubt. Because the only way to really be happy is to continue to move in the direction of your desire.  And when we move in the direction of our desire, we honor our innate self-worth.

How do I move in the direction of my desire? I borrow this from Abraham Hicks. Pivot. When you know what you don’t want, you can better understand what you do want. Ask yourself, is this desire in alignment with my bliss? Bliss meaning satisfaction, happy, fun, joy and fulfillment. All qualities based on worthiness. As masters of our own destiny, we must move in the direction of our desire in order to be satisfied. And that blissful feeling of satisfaction only comes when you honor your worthiness and allow your desire to unfold. So, you choose...stay the same, give energy to your doubts and fears or pivot by moving toward your personal path of bliss.
